September Artist of the Month...Elisa Ameglio

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Elisa Ameglio. Inspired to explore her love of lettering and calligraphy after working as a nurse in a busy Intensive Care unit. Read on to find out more about @hand_l3tt3ringhoneyeli85

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

Hello everyone! I graduated in nursing and work in the hospital in the intensive care unit. I have always been fascinated and attracted by stationery (pens, notebooks, diaries, highlighters, etc ...) since I was a child, but the passion for lettering exploded about 3 years ago with the purchase of my first brush pens. It was love at first sight; it transmits emotions of joy and total relaxation. After this first experience I then started taking small online courses to learn this technique in depth.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

I started from the web and Pinterest where to take inspiration for my first works but over time my attention has shifted to everything around me (environment, time, colours, seasons, languages, etc ...) without placing any limit to my inspiration. In short, everything can turn into a word or a sentence.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

I think it’s being able to create your own style to allow you to be recognised and identified in your works without resorting to comparisons or combinations. Your talent and touch are the foundations from which to pave the way!

Do you have a favourite style?

In lettering there are many styles and facets of every single style, but my favourite is the Bounce. I realised that this style belongs to me because it gives me complete freedom of action in creation.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

This is a good question, let me think ... it was definitely my first job done for a friend who has a clothing store, in which I realised the name of the store to be exhibited to customers! Currently the project I’m dedicating and working on is just that for you! Such an opportunity doesn’t often happen!

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

Lettering has been and still is an outlet from everyday work, which is often really heavy. It has become my comfort zone where I can dive completely, whether it’s 10 minutes or hours. It fits perfectly with my daily life, without taking away space and time from family and friends. It also allowed me to get in touch and meet many passionate people like me.

What are your favourite tools to use?

Without a doubt, brush pens! But in addition to these pens, I use the brush and water a lot to create the blending between the various colours!

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

The advice I can dispassionately give is not to stop at the first writing or the first job done... mine were really terrible! This is normal and you have to go through this road! The important thing is to continue practising and training, even just 5 minutes every day but above all having fun doing it! Another very important advice is to invest immediately in the purchase of quality material by looking for the best brands, be they pens, brush or the same paper on which to do your work! They are too important to achieve the results one aspires to!
