Meet our new Artist of the Month... Somaiyeh Dashtee! @theletteringpad. Somaiyeh started her calligraphy journey at a young age, but pressed pause to follow a career in microbiology. In recent years she found inspiration again through social media and now persues her calligraphy dreams full time! Want inspiration to delve deeper into the hand lettering world? Read on for Somaiyeh's story...

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and learning begin?

A former microbiologist turned calligrapher, from Hyderabad, India. I began my journey at age 13 with old English script (with fountain pen) at a summer camp in secondary school. This artform earned me recognition as a solo calligraphy artist in college. However, I later put calligraphy aside to focus on my profession. In 2019, I rediscovered my passion for calligraphy when I encountered dip pen calligraphy on social media. Enthralled by the process of using nibs and inks, I fell in love with pointed pen script and its flourishes. Since then, there has been no looking back.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

My artistic inspiration comes from a diverse array of sources, including nature, wall murals, ancient Persian illumination, and rare calligraphy books. These influences allow me to craft vintage and themed art pieces for my clients, adding a unique touch to their special moments. I am influenced by numerous artists, such as Nina Tran, Suzanne Cunningham, Heather Held, Michael Ward, David Grimes, Michael Sull, and Sachin Shah. I am particularly captivated by offhand, festive, and Victorian flourished pieces.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

Calligraphy has always been my passion, and I never imagined it would become a professional endeavor, leading me to establish my own business, "The Lettering Pad." Balancing personal life with growing my business is challenging, and I constantly strive to nurture my artistic side and improve as a calligrapher. The most rewarding aspects of the creative industry are the supportive community on Instagram and the satisfaction of my clients and brands with the work I deliver.

Do you have a favourite style?

I'm head over heels for pointed pen scripts! Copperplate is my go-to, especially for its beautiful flourishes. Just can't get enough of Spencerian structures lately. And when it comes to broad pen scripts, Uncials and Fraktur are my absolute favorites to work on.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

One of the most exciting projects I've worked on recently was offering my engraving services for the H&M Home launch event, where I calligraphed and engraved various surfaces, mostly coffee mugs. Right now, I'm busy with handwritten wedding invitations,

honing my Spencerian skills, one-on-one pointed pen calligraphy workshops,  and creating bespoke engraved mugs for a client.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

My work as a calligrapher deeply influences my everyday life by cultivating patience, precision, and an appreciation for detail. Practicing Copperplate and Spencerian scripts not only refines my technical skills but also brings a sense of calm and mindfulness. The beauty of the flourishing aspects inspires creativity in other areas of my life, and the discipline of regular practice enhances my focus and perseverance. Overall, calligraphy is both a meditative practice and a creative outlet that enriches my daily experiences.

What are your favourite tools to use?

I'm captivated by the calming, rhythmic process of dipping my nib in ink and seeing it flow onto paper. My go to tool is the oblique holder, while I turn to brush pens and Pilot Parallel pens for events. My adoration for fountain pens knows no boundaries.

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

When delving into any art form or creative pursuit, I think it's important to appreciate the process and experiment to discover which art form or script resonates with you.

Remember, it's never too early or too late to start. Grab your tools and dive in. Nowadays, there's a rush to monetize rather than to truly learn the art form, which I believe is misguided. Take your time, enjoy the journey, don't be afraid to make mistakes, learn, evolve, and shine. Keep practicing and keep honing your skills.
