What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and learning begin?
I am a Turkish illustrator living in Barcelona. I have been interested in drawing since childhood, and this passion gained an academic dimension when I studied art education at university. When creating my illustrations, I sometimes draw inspiration from a small moment, a word, or a sentence. This is where lettering comes into play for me. I truly enjoy combining my illustrations with lettering in my work.
Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?
Actually, I don’t have a clear answer to this question because I believe inspiration can come from anything. Sometimes it’s the natural colors of nature, a movie we’ve watched, music we’ve listened to, or even real life. Even while waiting in line at the market, a conversation behind me can spark new ideas. Being observant and trying to truly see what’s around me is a source of inspiration and nourishment for me.
What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?
Just imagine having an idea and being able to shape and express it in your own unique way. It’s an amazing feeling. It also helps you connect with other people. You get to discover brand-new colors and styles. I’d say it’s an endless journey of learning and joy. Of course, during this process, your inner journey isn’t always positive. We can experience creative blocks.
Do you have a favourite style?
I love seeing the blending of colors and how each background turns out differently. Projects where illustrations and lettering come together are a priority for me.
What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?
I have been working as a children’s book illustrator for a long time. My favorite projects are the ones that challenge my imagination. Currently, I am in the sketching phase of an enjoyable book.
How does your work relate to your everyday life?
As a full-time freelance illustrator, art is a big part of my life. I have a workspace at home, and this room is actually my office :) With my daily work routine, I try to make the best of what I can do in this small room.
What are your favourite tools to use?
I love working in my sketchbook. I take notes and make experiments. Besides that, I enjoy working with inks and different paints.
What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?
They can discover what makes them happy while doing what they do. This is a process, and everyone’s process is unique to them. I recommend steady progress without rushing.
If they focus on improving themselves in the work they do or are doing, they can progress faster. And the more practice they get, the faster they can develop.
