October Artist of the Month...Michelle Lee

Meet our new Artist of the Month...Michelle Lee. Based in Penang, Malaysia @shelleegraphy has a love of modern calligraphy. Read on to find out more about our Artist of the Month!

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

Hello from Penang, Malaysia! My background is in mass communication. When I was a primary student, I always had love for styling letters and words. It was not until I was 16 or 17 when modern calligraphy became a trend and I fell more in love with this art.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

I find inspiration from things around me, sometimes even the silliest things like toilet signs! Other creatives in this community inspire me too, you'd be amazed to see all the unique and mindblowing pieces they create!

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

I think the hardest part being an art creator is to get over art blocks. On some days it just doesn't feel right. Thankfully, along the years, I've learned to step away and come back with a fresh mind. The most rewarding part of working in the creative industry is seeing your finished piece and how your clients appreciate your art. That I believe, is one of the best feelings in the world.

Do you have a favourite style?

I've been constantly trying new styles and have enjoyed them all, but one that will always have my heart is flourishing.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

Some of my recent exciting/memorable projects include designing lettering pieces for a 2023 planner (soon-to-be revealed!) and also making pieces when clients share their stories behind the pieces they order. I am currently working on my ideas and plans for Christmas gifting.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

I believe that having my passion as a job is one of the greatest blessings! I get to experiment and try new things, there's no limit in creativity and it really suits my curious personality! All my pieces are a reflection of my beliefs and mood when I'm creating.

What are your favourite tools to use?

There's just so many! But I will still always go back to the basics, with a pencil, eraser, water brush pen and watercolours.

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

My advice would be:

  • Stay humble and appreciate every milestone.
  • Passion is not enough, it is your hard work that keeps you going.
  • Be consistent, you won't improve if you don't put in effort.
  • Don't be discouraged or distracted by how social media potrays art, there's more to that than what you see on your screens.

As for how to get started:

  • Do not be afraid to make mistakes.
  • Do not be shy to ask other creatives.
  • Get inspired by other creators.
  • You don't need fancy tools to help you get started. Most importantly, practice and master the basics.
