Manuscript Pen Company go back to school to Say Something Special

It’s been a long time since we were in a classroom, studying Shakespeare and exploring sums. Luckily, we didn’t have to remember how to create functional fractions or the atomic number of the noble gases when we went spent the morning with St Edmunds Catholic Academy last week.

Thanks to keen calligrapher and Business Director Mrs Raj, Manuscript was asked to don a blazer and tie to show children to start their journey into calligraphy – safe to say, these students have a fantastic road ahead of them!

Following an initial practice session with a selection of copperplate lettering, 30 kids were asked to #SaySomethingSpecial, as we gear up to the second World Calligraphy Day.

Children from ages 13-17 were asked to put down their ballpoints and try something new with a fountain pen – which many mastered immediately!

After a quick search for some inspiration and some short discussion about the best inspirational quotes, the classroom fell silent as these keen kids set to work to create something to make one of their peers at Birmingham Children’s Hospital smile.

With glitter, tissue paper, colouring pencils and creativity in the air, the bell rang for the end of the lesson. But unlike the typical rush to the playground for a quick kick-around, every student kept working well into their break time.

Mrs Raj, who create wedding invitations in their spare time, said: “They’ve loved it and I’ve never seen some of them so quiet! We’ve created some beautiful pieces of art and it sounds like a lot of them are going to keep practicing at home.”

Sounds like we’ve created a new batch of calligraphers for the future!

A credit to their school, every child in both sessions on the day have created a unique, thoughtful and colourful piece of work, that will now be sent to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and form part of a small exhibition at The Pen Museum on 15th August.
