Troubleshooting

My fountain pen isn’t writing

This is usually a quick fix.

Please check:

  • That you've cleaned the nib section with hot soapy water and flushed it thoroughly with clean water & wiped dry with a soft cloth.
  • The cartridge has been pushed in firmly until it clicks.
  • The ink has had a few minutes to flow through (try drawing downward strokes until it flows).

If your pen still isn’t writing, feel free to contact us and we’ll help troubleshoot further.

Why won’t ink stay on my nib?

This is usually caused by the protective coating still being on the nib, or too much ink being loaded at once.

A quick clean and a lighter dip normally solves it!

Simply carefully remove the nib or nib section, wash in a small bowl of warm soapy water, rinse clean, and dry with a soft cloth.

I'm left handed, what products are for me?

All of them! We're proud to say we offer a free nib exchange service, no matter where you purchased your pen from. Simply contact our team to exchange your fountain pen nibs. All of our dip pens and marker pens are suitable for left handers too.

I broke the tines of my dip nib, what do I do?

Unfortunately, once bent or broken the nib is no longer suitable. Nibs can be delicate and responsive to pressure. We would recommend checking out our handy refills page to reorder, and then using our learners hub to discover how to use your nib to get the best from it.

Why is the ink feathering or bleeding on to the page?

The paper you choose to use can vary the results greatly with different nibs and inks. We advise experimenting with different types and thicknesses of paper to reach your desired effect.

Getting the best from your Manuscript product

How do I know which nib is right for my project?

There are many different calligraphy and lettering styles and this can feel confusing at times! Don't worry, we've got you covered. Check out our learners hub or nib guide page for help choosing your tools.

I'm a beginner, how do I know what nibs and products are best for me?

We have a whole learning hub dedicated to our beginner calligraphers! Check out our beginner's page to discover everything you need.

How do I care for my pens and nibs?

Keeping your nibs clean, dry, and safely stored is the best way to ensure they last.

To clean nibs:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm soapy water and carefully hand wash the nib or nib section.
  • Rinse the nibs under the tap in clean water.
  • Carefully dry with kitchen roll or a soft cloth, being careful of the delicate nib tines.
  • Store nibs in a nib tin, or for pens replace the cap and store in a tin or pencil case.
  • After each use, ensure you clean and dry your nibs to ensure they're ready for your next use.

When it comes to dip nibs, they can be delicate and responsive to pressure. We recommend being careful not to grasp the end when you are removing a nib, and to be mindful not to apply too much pressure when writing. If you need help, check out our learners hub for more!

What’s the difference between fountain pen ink and calligraphy ink?

Fountain pen ink is thinner and designed to flow through fountain pens safely. You would use an ink converter and our bottled fountain pen ink.

Calligraphy, shimmer, or acrylic ink is usually thicker and should only be used with dip pens unless stated otherwise.
